Life Saving Rescue Waggin’ Program to Help Find Thousands of At-Risk Dogs
New Homes
The Quincy Humane Society announced that it has joined the PetSmart Rescue Waggin program (Midwest Region) to help give up to 8000 exuberant tail wagging dogs and puppies a second chance at life each year. The Quincy Humane Society and dozens of other animal welfare organizations partner with PetSmart Charities across the United States to transport dogs from areas where shelters are crowded due to pet overpopulation, to partner shelters in Wisconsin that are in need of more adoptable dogs, saving them from the risk of being euthanized. “We know that wonderful homes potentially await these dogs if we can get them to the right communities,” said Susana Della Maddalena, PetSmart Charities executive director, “The Rescue Waggin’ is the nation’s first and only nationwide pet transport program with supporting spay/neuter grants that will bring hope to thousands of homeless animals each year. We rejoice every time one of our transported dogs gets adopted.” “Even though we are a No Kill organization, we felt the Rescue Waggin’ could definitely benefit the Adams County area. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, must turn away animals in need of our services. Through the Rescue Waggin’ program we are able to help these animals as well as the local animal control agencies by taking dogs that are in danger of euthanasia due to space and time constraints. The spay neuter services support will eventually aid us in reducing unwanted populations of companion animals, ultimately ending euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals.” Says Sally Westerhoff, interim executive director of the Quincy Humane Society. A state-of the-art custom-designed transport vehicle, each Rescue Waggin’ safely and humanely transports the dogs on long-haul trips. Drivers trained in pet care and animal first aid monitor the dogs during transport via closed circuit video. The cacanine passengers enjoy climate-controlled individual quarters, and fresh water throughout the trip. The Quincy Humane Society was founded in 1880 and our mission is to lead the way to a No Kill Community through affordable and accessible programs. Our goal is to save lives. We offer low cost/no cost spay neuter and vaccination programs to the tri-state region to income eligible individuals and families.
