Volunteer FAQ
Q: How old do you have to be to volunteer?
A: Children between ages 12 and 16 may volunteer without an adult, only after the Volunteer Coordinator approves. Teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age may volunteer without an
adult, but must have a signed permission slip by a parent/guardian. We are no longer accepting new volunteers less than 12 years of age.
Q: How do I begin volunteering?
A: All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation prior to volunteering at the shelter. Volunteer applications are to be turned in at the time of orientation. Volunteers are also
asked to go through certain training classes depending on the animals they are interested in working with.
Q: How many hours do I have to volunteer?
A: We ask that all volunteers spend time at the shelter 3 times a month or more.
Q: Is it possible to job shadow a QHS employee?
A: We do not offer job shadowing opportunities at this time.
Q: Can groups come out to volunteer?
A: There are times when QHS can use groups to help with special projects – such as cleaning up around the shelter, landscaping, or food/blanket drives. To find out what is
available, please email the volunteer coordinator. Due to safety concerns, groups of volunteers are unable to work directly with the animals. Volunteers that work directly with the
animals have had specialized training in order to handle the animals.
Q: Can I volunteer at any time?
A: Volunteer shifts are scheduled. You pick the time and schedule it with the volunteer coordinator.
Q: I would like to do something for QHS that is not listed on the volunteer programs. Is that ok?
A: Absolutely! We have volunteers that help with special projects, take pictures at the shelter, create the myspace page – the possibilities are endless. If you have a special
skill (such as web design, grant writing, or photo editing) we would love to have you as well!
Q: I have court appointed community service hours. Can I complete them at QHS?
A: We do accept court appointed volunteer service hours at the shelter. Those seeking hours MUST attend a volunteer orientation prior to beginning their service hours. In most cases,
individuals completing service hours are given tasks other than working directly with the
animals. Please download the Community Service Application and bring it with you to an
orientation to begin your hours.
